Joe.....I plead guilty.......was an operator at WAR 1941/42.....sine
"GR"........worked WVN San Juan cicruit many times as well as WVL Canal
Zone.........I spent most watches on WTJ Ft. Shafter....that seemed to be
where I ended up. We were using recorded slip and perforated tape
(Boehme/Kleinschmidt) and made a transistion into radiotype......old IBM
electrics that ran at over 100 wpm......sounded like a machine gun when
receiving traffic.
There was always a reason why our equipment would not function.........that
was the time to fire up an old Vibroplex and handle the traffic manually.
I still keep in touch with Rod W9BRD/VA3ZBB who was "RN" and Bob Denniston
VP2VI who was "RD".
There is still a net of WAR operators functioning.....I dont remember the
time or frequency but if you touch bases with W2RRY he can fill you
in.....he was very active with them.
Not too many of us left ....
