I am writing to invite you all to support the operation of the School Club Roundup (SCR). This is our 16th year. The purpose of the SCR is to get young people acquainted with amateur radio by getting them on the air in a low pressure contest format. Info about the SCR is available at http://www.arrl.org/contests/announcements/scr.html
At my own school club there has been a significant increased interest in getting licenses and getting on the air. Some think it was influenced by 9/11. We have 6 new technicians with several others studying for their first licenses and for upgrades. We will be operating W2CXN from Brooklyn Technical High School.
There is an SCR email reflector too. [email protected]. Based on recent activity there are numerous groups and individuals preparing for operation in the SCR. There are in-school clubs and groups at all levels. Others are going to set up "field day" style demonstration stations. Some prominent club stations that are planning to participate are W1AW, W5RRR and K3FBI.
Although scoring favors contacts with other school stations, most qso's are with individual (non-club) stations. Teachers and other experienced operators report that the kids appreciate meeting new and interesting people on the air. Most will take time to chat rather than just go for the points.
If you do operate, we would like to know about it. Even if you do not want to be in the contest, send us a "check log" or even an email with comments. Results are usually reported in the September issue of QST.
The School Club Roundup will run from February 11-15.
Thanks
73
