>From the March 1 ARRL NC Section Newsletter:
Amateur radio lost a highly skilled technical expert on Wednesday.
Danny Hampton, K4ITL, died at home despite heroic efforts to revive him.
Danny designed and built the PCRN analog linked repeater system in the
1970's and also created the PRN system that links 60 DMR repeaters in NC
and SC. His efforts were recognized at the Dayton Hamvention in 2009
when he received the Ham of the Year Award. His funeral service will be
at the McCullers Community Baptist Church, 133 Rand Road, Raleigh.
Visitation is at noon and the funeral is at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March
6th.
I first met Danny around mid-1960s when he was operating a repair shop over
some store near the intersection of Peace Street and N. Person Street in
Raleigh. I was too young to drive, but my father took me to get my
Halicrafter S-120 receiver and his CB radio repaired. I was really
impressed with Danny's ability to work on electronics in his visibly
impaired condition. We returned again a few weeks later and he took time to
talk with me about becoming a ham. A couple decades later I met him again
at the Raleigh Hamfest and he still remembered me and my S-120 and my
father.
