Thanks Tom. Even more depressing than my earlier analysis. 
They were doomed from the moment he started the takeoff run. Flaps were fully retracted. Takeoff minimum 15 degrees for that high performance plane. Maybe a bit more flaps advisable on grass and a short field. I guess a lack of concentration with excited kids etc., combined with a quick turnaround from the previous flight he abbreviated or neglected his checklist. 
On a long paved runway you would probably get by. No chance at that airport. 
Terrible ending for a great guy, top op and talented friend.
