Portable operation from Atlantic Beach, NC (Carteret County, FM14PQ, IOTA

Wow! This was a fun contest, even if it was my first time. With only a
4-band end fed halfwave vertical, I felt loud on 40 and 20. I struggled at
the beginning, running on 40, trying to get a good rhythm for my
exchange. And,
lost two contacts and 2 mults because I did not read the rules for how to
log a station that is on a county line. I was surprised that with only a
couple of exceptions, everyone seemed to understand how the exchanges
worked, even the DX stations that called-in. As a result, I had some high
rates (103 for over 2 hours on 20M). I did try 80M a few times but the
noise level was high and there were few stations. I stayed on 40 to finish
out the effort. I did take a lunch break around noon to get some Starbucks
coffee and a plate of brisket from my favorite supplier.
Thanks to all of the PVRCers who called!
I look forward to next year’s activity. I’ll have to re-think the antennas
for both the CQ 160 SSB and NCQP such that I do not have to play with the
antenna configuration in the short time between the two activities. And
have coffee and food readily available.
Rig: Elecraft K3+ with Heil HC4 mic element
Antenna: PAR EF-Quad (10 – 40M) End Fed Halfwave Vertical (40M Inverted-L)
on 43 ft fiberglass pole with base 9 ft above ground
