Comments:

This was my first FT4/FT8 contest and I worked hard with the help of fellow
PVRC member Eric NR4O to get the software ready. I was pumped up to go at
8:00 pm Friday night with thoughts of doing the whole 24 hrs. BUT, Friday
night I realized that I was wrong about the time and would have to wait
until Saturday morning at 8:00am which meant no full 24 hours since I had to
quit around 11:00pm for church the next morning.

Started on FT8 20m and got six 6 point stations in the FIRST MINUTE, 2-BY1
(my first China contacts ever), 2-VK3 and 2-YB1. Thinking, boy this is
going to be GOOD, not to mention I had an instant lead on fellow PVRC
contester and friend Eric NR4O on the online scoreboard. The next time I
checked the scoreboard, Eric NR4O had sailed right past me and I never
caught up. Great job Eric!

I finally moved to FT4 after 3.5 hours into the contest and managed to make
153 of 305 Qs. Maybe should have moved sooner, but with that great start on
FT8, I didn't want to get off that horse.

I did notice that multiple times when making a contact, the other party
would send 73 but the Q never went to the log. Not sure what caused this.
I did a lot of calling because when I did S&P, a lot would not answer me but
came to me when I called.

I did use the "Call 1st" option when calling but this was a problem when
stations responding did not have a Grid Square, not to mention getting
locals instead of DX stations. I would recommend not using this option.
The rules say to enter ZZ00 as the grid square when this happens but I was
never able to enter anything in the grid pop-up window, consequently no
contact in the log. On numerous occasions making a call, the software would
get hung on the second message and never completed the connection. Again,
no contact in the log and more time wasted.

Even with these minor problems, I had a great time and thanks to fellow club
members Eric NR4O and Steve NC4SW for their Qs.

73,
Don-W4BBT
