Comments: First real attempt to operate a contest from the farm station. It
was .... interesting. The only antenna I have up is an OCFD hanging from an
AB-577 mast. It's been up for several months, but hasn't been used for
anything except receiving. The K3 began flashing Hi-SWR warning
periodically, but then went back to normal. After a couple of hours, I was
noticing that the SWR was staying high during a transmission. So, decided
to bite the bullet and lowered the AB-577 so I could get to the feedpoint.
Everything looked ok and I took the opportunity to rig up a pulley to raise
and lower the antenna. Re-raised the mast and everything seemed to
work....with the antenna. The K3 began occasionally throwing a DSP error
code. Usually hitting any button would clear it and I could continue. Then
it got to the point where I lost receive audio, and later transmit audio.
(I think N8II thought was a lunatic, called him on 40m then my receive
audio died. Had to re-boot then found him again and he said he called me
four times earlier...) A re-boot would clear things but that was being
counterproductive. About 5:00 I decided to bite another bullet and reload
the K3 firmware. That bricked the rig. So I decided to pack it up and head
home.

When the antenna and radio were working, conditions were meh at best.
Although OM2VL always managed to find me on each band. He was literally the
only station I heard on 15m and worked me almost immediately when I CQ'd. I
spent another 10 minutes futilely CQing before going back to an open band.

Despite the issues, it was in some perverted way fun. But I don't want to
repeat the experience.

73, Mike N4GU
