This started out as a stinker of contest. 20m was sorta open but not
really. Had trouble getting a run going anywhere and 20 is my strongest
band. Finally got some traction and got some decent runs. Later on took a
few peeks at 15 and snagged some mults. 10 was DOA and forgot to get the
locals to run up and get us a mult. Went to 40 early, in my mind, at about
4:00 local, but managed to carve out a hole at 7195 and had lots of steady
business before the band went long. 40m is my weakest band here, but my
inverted vee seemed a-ok this weekend.
This was one of the first times I've looked at the online scoreboard during
a contest. Apparently I've set it up in N1MM and forgot about it, so my
(usually pitiful) score may have been posted but I never followed it. I did
this time and chasing K3AJ was a real motivator. At one point I made it to
#2 for SOLP before reality and my own sloth dropped me down to where I
should be.
I took off for dinner time and then hit 75m for a bit where conditions
seemed good early. My fun meter was getting pegged at the thought of
another 3-4 hrs of slogging through the QRM and QRN on 75m since even 40m
was dried up by that point. I came back and hit 160m to round up some mults
and actually had a short run before calling it quits early. If I was a real
he-man contester I might have slugged it out and given K3AJ a run for his
money, but with N1LN blowing most everybody away, I was running for 2nd
place in the state at best. N1MM says I worked just a tick over 6 hrs which
puts my overall rate at 100/hr which might be a personal best.
It was great to hear so many PVRC calls on and some great signals (working
K3MM on 20m from NC is a testament to his station - nobody else up that way
was heard). Now let's get ready for 160m.
