OK, I know absolutely NOTHING about VHF. I have a Yaesu VX-7 (silver) HT I
bought a number of years ago. I estimate it has cost me about $15 per QSO so
far which makes the K3's cheap by comparison.
But I'm thinking to have a base/HT capability at the Harbour Rock villa on
VP5 would be a benefit to visiting hams for fun and to save on cell minutes
keeping in touch with the house and each other while exploring the island.
Base unit should have built-in 120V supply and the thingee with a push
button that you talk into. Think they're called microphones. The other end
HT should have a good rechargeable battery/charger with 5W max output. No
tone codes, digital memories or other bells and whistles required. Just
reliable two way FM. Age not critical but should still look good and have a
good forecast remaining life. In other words, the system should ideally be
as simple as dirt and equally cheap. If you've upgraded to the various
digital/internet linked stuff and you've got something obsolete like this
(either base or HT) gathering dust, let me know. I'm sure it would
appreciate semi-retirement on a beautiful Caribbean island!
Open to swaps if you're looking for something I might have-like that $15/QSO
VX7!
Off-line responses, please.
