[PVRCNC] [PVRC] FW: [DXLab] WWV Petition

Dismantling useful government infrastructure seems to be the political “Holy Grail” these days and this seems to be one of the more stupid ones. Hopefully non-technical people who find their “atomic clocks” are obsolete and no longer synchronized will understand, but of course by then it will be too late. As Tom says, a few cents (probably a fraction of a cent for most taxpayers) for a useful service shouldn’t be in the budget cuts. Privatization and reducing expense at any cost isn’t always in the public interest.

Maybe CHU-Canada can take over the responsibility of sending the synchronizing signals to keep our atomic clocks running.
Too bad a few cents out of all the tax returns filed in the USA can't be used to keep the synchronizing signals on the air.
I guess the only option to remote synchronizing a clock would now be with GPS if WWV and WWVH are shut down. But that would add complexity to atomic clock designs and raise the consumer price.
I like those miniature ferrite rod antennas that can receive 60 kHz.!

Hi Dave,
This is an exact quote from page NIST-25 of the proposed FY2019 NIST budget:
<www.osec.doc.gov/bmi/budget/FY19CBJ/NIST_and_NTIS_FY2019_President's_Budget_for_508_comp.pdf <http://www.osec.doc.gov/bmi/budget/FY19CBJ/NIST_and_NTIS_FY2019_President's_Budget_for_508_comp.pdf%3e> >;
"NIST will discontinue the dissemination of the U.S. time and frequency via the NIST radio stations in Hawaii and Ft. Collins, CO. These radio stations transmit signals that are used to synchronize consumer electronic products like wall clocks, clock radios, and wristwatches, and may be used in other applications like appliances, cameras, and irrigation controllers

Joe, that I don't know. Folks on other lists are talking about the time signals going away but I cannot find any "official" articles that say one way or the other. I'll keep trying to nail that down.

Dave. I think WWVB is the station that keeps the clocks adjusted. I don't think they are doing away with that station? -Joe N3HEE

My 95 year young father, WA4TCS, has Parkinson's Disease and NEEDS these signals to adjust his five clocks mainly at the change of Daylight Savings Time (DST). He lives by himself in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF). You see, he can no longer adjust his clocks due to the shaking of his hands. I'm sure there are many other groups of people that NEED these signals, including a subset of those groups that don't realize that they have a need for these signals. The effect of closing down WWV/WWVH will be widespread.
