I find it almost trivial to talk about our VP5 property and the VP5M contest
station in light of the loss and suffering of others on the islands and in
Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Leewards. Please do all you can to
support the relief efforts there. I still can hardly believe how well we
came through two storms of this magnitude. The roof will be repaired and the
SteppIR will be replaced. The other good news is that the infrastructure on
Providenciales has proved very resilient. The power company has put together
a large team from all over, especially Canada, home of its parent company,
and brought in a large number of utility trucks for their use. Our power
came back on last Sunday, 10 days after Irma and stayed up during the
tropical force winds of Maria. Two restaurants near us, among others flooded
by storm surge have already reopened and more will follow to get the primary
industry, tourism, going again. That is the key since only with employment
will local residents again have money to purchase fuel, food and supplies
which are available in the stores which have reopened.
I was not set up for RTTY, and did not have good antennas, so did not
participate in CQWW RTTY. The station will be on the air for both the SSB
and CW sessions as well as ARRL DX in 2018.
Again, thanks for all the messages of concern. We came through fine.
73,
Jim K4QPL
