With the old dial phones when you took your finger out after selecting a
number the dial returned to its stop at a measured pace to avoid
confusing the central office relays that were capturing the number and
setting up a connection. In high school I learned a trick that took
advantage of the fact that the CO equipment had been made a lot faster
in some places, including where I lived. A well placed piece of paper
clip could cause the dial to return as fast as its spring allowed: maybe
1/4 of a second. My folks were tolerant of the house phone having the
modified dialer and we enjoyed being able to dial a number in much less
time.
