[PVRCNC] JT5DX and WPX M/S

That’s really the right way to look at it. If we ain’t havin’ fun, why are we here? The other important factor is competing with oneself. If I can feel like I’ve improved my skills, learned something about propagation, handled a pileup better and maybe scored higher than last time, there’s the satisfaction. Station improvement is a never ending goal that has to be balanced with financial and space realities. Tribander/wires/K3 may not be the ultimate, but it’s a long way from a WWII surplus SuperPro rx, Command set crystal xmtr and dipole.

Number 1 in class is always the goal, but being near the top against tough competition is never too shabby. And believe it or not, there is life outside of contesting!

73,

Jim

I think this is a very good thread developing.

I've always enjoyed trying to maximize fun during contests. It's still the number one driving factor for contesting for me. Until recent years, the majority of my contesting has taken place from my home station with very modest antennas. I've always enjoyed trying to maximize my score with a severely outmatched station. There's a big sense of satisfaction to be had from that.

Another factor is my interest in propagation - I love catching odd openings and learning more about the bands.

The classic spirit of M/S is a fantastic way to operate. Simply get on an operate and have another op take over when you have had enough - no in-band lockouts, etc. While the big time M/S operations are incredible in terms of score and engineering, the traditional M/S operations are very appealing and it's awesome to see people still getting excited about it.

My enthusiasm for the hobby is as strong as the day I received my ticket in the mail in August of 1989.

73,

Nate/N4YDU

No, technology alone won't win. But even a bunch of WRTC ops operating
"boys and their radio" aren't likely to compete against the a group of
"good" ops behind the console of the Starship Enterprise. It's one thing to
compete against another op at a better station, but if you're competing
against FOUR ops at the better station, well, something about bringing a
knife to a gunfight. Grasshopper will run rings around us all dual CQing,
but even he only has two ears. I'll still contest when its fun for me, how
its fun for me. But you know who's picture's gonna end up on the cover of
the NCJ.
