Hi NC PVRC'ers.
I guess with Labor Day we're now looking at the main contest season kickoff.
As some of you know, I've got a major need to "get portable" with a contest
grade radio that can travel in a bag with shorts and tee-shirts, not one
that the shorts and tee-shirts can fit inside of! I had originally thought
the TS-590S would fill that need. It's a great radio value, but playing with
it head-to-head with the Orion in the CWOpen and the crappy conditions made
me realize it's not as competitive as I would like. Still makes a very good
second radio and I intend to keep it.
Love the ergonomics and performance of the O2, but reluctantly it looks
like it's now time for me to move over to the other side with a similar
performance radio that the airlines won't frown on. I really haven't put
that many hours on the Orion II and seldom driven it in a major contest at
more than 5W. It has the optional 600 hz. roofing filter. Nothing else.
9.5/10 appearance/performance. For anyone interested in SO2R I'll throw in
an ICE bandpass filter, (compliments of N4AF) that has a cable to the Orion
band-data output for automatic bandswitching. The radio went back to Ten-Tec
last year for a minor push-button issue and checkup. The market seems to be
around $2k. I'm offering it first to PVRC-NC asking $1,800.00 including the
ICE filter.
The extra portability also means I won't need my Kenwood TS-480SAT. It has
both the 500 and 250 cw IF filters and has been used very little. Great
little radio. Asking $750 including the filters.
Have some other items-Kenwood PS-32 speaker, Kenwood PS-52 (bit of hum,
needs caps) as well as some "boat anchor" stuff that I'd like to clear out
of the shack. LMK if you're interested.
73,
Jim, K4QPL
