OK. It IS for the Clean Sweep although the sticker looks more like an
endorsement than the primary purpose of the certificate.

Many thanks, Matt. Appreciate the clarification which I'll pass on. I think
it would be good if there was some additional clarification on the
certificate as well as the "Clean Sweep" endorsement.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your note. Certificates are awarded to recognize those who have
obtained a Clean Sweep whether or not they placed first in their section or
division. This is indicated by a Clean Sweep sticker in the lower left-hand
part of the certificate. Their section and category is also listed. There
should not be a winning place listed on a certificate that is awarded solely
for a Clean Sweep. This is the same award template used for 2012 and
possibly earlier. One thing to keep in mind is that the Clean Sweep
certificate is based on adjudicated logs as opposed to the Clean Sweep mug,
which is based on a claimed score.

I hope this helps to clear up any questions and please let me know if you
are seeing something other than what I described above. I will review the
awards section of the Sweepstakes webpage and see how we can include some
information about the Clean Sweeps only certificates.

Subject: 2013 SS Awards

Hi Matt,

A number of us in PVRC have been surprised to receive certificates in
various classes of SS for 2013 where we were not actually a section or
division winner. For example, I got one for LU SSB where my score was only
5th in NC section.

Much speculation has been going on as to the criteria for these awards as
there is nothing in the cover letter or on the face of the certificate to
explain the basis for the award. Several have reported having a Clean Sweep
sticker but again, we're not sure if that was the basis for the certificate
itself.

While we don't have a problem with ARRL recognizing achievement, it would be
good to know how the determination is made over and above the obvious
section and division first place winners. That would also be positive and
avoid any feeling that the bar for awards is being lowered to such a degree
that some of the competitive edge and the recognition of excellence is
diluted.

I'll be happy to circulate on our "reflector" any comments you or others at
ARRL might have on this subject.

73,

Jim, K4QPL
