Looks like PVRC owned this contest once again by the amount of members that I worked.
Despite storms on Friday night, Saturday gradually cleared up, so low band conditions were a bit better than I was afraid they would be. It just became a tremendous chore to find anyone new to work on Sunday afternoon, despite using a Telnet Skimmer that ran spots so fast at times that it was just a blur.
I suspect that participation may be down a bit, as scores look lower overall as compared to last year.
I was surprised to see that a lot of guys missed VE8/VY1 this year despite several being active. I think that most were part timers that made it harder to find than the usual VY1JA full-time efforts. I heard VE8EV several times with a zoo of a pileup, so I waited. I caught him on Sunday afternoon with few callers.
I haven't used a CW Skimmer since last years' SS, but I don't ever recall seeing as many poor spots. My band map would fill up with a call and 3 or 4 "busted" variations (AA4NC, AA4N, AA4TEC, AA4NNN...) I recall that the skimmers that I had used previously had done a better job of correlating and dumping the mistakes. This would have really helped, since there were so many spots coming in that even with filtering, I could not click on the spot and have the K3 QSY. I think it was just pure overload of N1MM and the radio. I probably need to upgrade to N1MM+ and work on getting a more effective skimmer connection.
Thanks for all of the Qs. Despite Sunday, this is still a fun contest and the Big Daddy of all domestic contests. See you from W4MR in the Phone SS.
73,
Will AA4NC
