Guys,

Time Warner Cable was out here Jan 31 fixing a bunch of bad connections
et al to get internet signal levels back to normal. They also said they
were required to swap my older modem for a newer one (red flag). The
older was a Motorola. It was dead silent and bulletproof. The newer
was some brand I never heard of --Touchstone Telephony. Internet worked
fine but:

I noticed a 15 to 20 db increase in noise floor the next day. First
thought it was power line noise caused by an overnight storm disturbing
something.

After a week of looking around with an AM radio, it was determined to be
the new modem. What a racket it made. Pull the plug and the noise
stops. An aluminium foil tent reduced things temporarily by about 15db.

Yeah, should have started in house first....

TWC was out here today and replaced the modem with an Ericson unit. It
is stone quiet.

I'm suspecting the Touchstone Telephony unit had a bad internal
switching power supply by design or otherwise.

Bottom line, if TWC tries to pass off one of those Touchstone modems on
you, just say no.
