I have been asked by Ken KU2US, organizer of the 13 Colonies Special
Event, if I would agree to coordinate operations from North Carolina (
K2J ) for this year's event. If you're not familiar with the 13 Colonies
event, please go to:

http://www.13colonies.info

This has grown to be quite popular, with over 62,000 QSO's made last
year by the 13 special event stations. That's up from 12,500 when it
started in 2009.
I participated last year and had a ball. It's a ton of fun being on the
receiving end of a pileup.

I'm looking for 2 or 3 additional NC stations to participate this year,
and would be thrilled if they came from our PVRCNC group. This is
especially significant for two reasons:

First, the event is now issuing a commemorative Memorial Award in honor
of NC native son Paul "Slim" Copeland, K4KCS of Greenville (SK), who was
one of the original participants when the program started. The plaque
goes to the operator with most Q's in a high power and low power
category (over/under 250W). Last year W2DAN of Rhode Island won the HP
award with 3,608 Q's and W1FH of Connecticut with 2,439 Q's for LP.
Wouldn't it be great to have that award presented to an NC station?

Second, with the loss of Slim, NC operations have not been well
represented. Last year, the MD team won top honors with 7,230 Q's, 2nd
Place to NH with 6,210, 3rd place to GA with 5,831 and 4th place to SC
with 5,466. NC was down at the bottom of the list. NOT ACCEPTABLE !

The 13 Colonies Special Event runs from July 1 (Mon) through July 6,
2013 (Sat). You can operate at any time(s) during that period using the
K2J call. We're going to coordinate station activities through an
e-mail alert system, so that we don't have more than one K2J station on
the air on the same bandand mode at the same time.

I need to finalize the stations who will be participating by the end of
the month. Each station will be duly registered by the organizer to use
the K2J callsign for the event. They are not permitting club
participation this year, but I have been authorized to add the total
number of ops in NC.

If you have an interest in participating as a K2J special event station
this year, please get in touch with me as soon as you can, so I can
finalize the team roster. I'll be at the meeting tonight to answer any
questions.

tnx es 73
Marc, W4MPS
