Kent,
For the money I like the Kenwood TS-590 a lot. The receiver is competitive,
the controls are simple, and the price is right.
If you're open to used rigs, an FT-1000 (of almost any variety) with the
roofing filters is a good choice. They're getting more affordable all the
time, and still hold up well.
For interfaces, I use a Microkeyer USB by K1EL for CW, and it's slick. For
all-in-one microHam is about the only game in town that does SSB, CW, and
RTTY, along with rig control, in one box.
