[PVRCNC] 15 meter SS propagation

If you're HP, and only using 2-el wires, I don't think I'd bother with a
second one. Actually, a "lousy" beam aimed WNW is best for SS. The multi
element stacked arrays, etc. are great for DX, but a liability in a domestic
contest since you've got a very broad azimuth of say 240 degrees here in NC
for potential callers. You don't need a perfect signal to a narrow beamwidth
unless you're trying to break the pileup on a VY1. Generally what you want
is a "good" signal everywhere in the US when you're running. Ty, K3MM,
actually uses a low dipole on 20M as an alternate.
I've found the VE7CA 2-el wire beam just skews the circle somewhat to the
west and redirects just some of the RF that otherwise would be departing
towards Howie and across the Atlantic. This weekend I was switching between
my TH7 at 70' and the portable tribander strung up about 40'. To everywhere
but the far west, Pac, AK, the 2 el was often better and did fine to NE
without having to turn a rotator. The take off angle is probably higher.
I'm not a guru and haven't run modelling patterns, but this little creature
cooks! It's hung to aim WNW and really works into everything from TX to MN
but is "bad" enough that it's more like a dipole in other directions. With
QRP I worked the Pr and Vi stations off the back that would have been
difficult from the TH7 without turning it.

I also found on 40M I picked up a couple db by switching between two dipoles
at about 60' hung about 90 degrees apart favoring N-S and E-W.
Hope that helps.
73,
Jim
