Good comments, Kaz.

There's still one more factor--elapsed time between start of run and spot. 
Operating from BiggGunn NY4A, I noticed that the "You have been spotted" 
messages were coming up almost instantaneously for us (Once within about 5 
seconds of my first CQ on 80M simultaneously from W3LPL, K3MM, and N4ZR!) 
whereas in previous years it would often take quite a while before a live 
peepul spotted us. The resulting pileups also came quicker. This is very 
important in a M/S or M/2 where you sometimes need to abandon/change your 
run frequency more often to change bands or get mults under the band change 
rules.
