They may have the wrong impedance twisted pairs or miss wired the pairs.

Online purchase yielded a Chinese cable that had DC connectivity but too big signal loss.  Junk.

My understanding is CAT5E is supposedly good for 100 Meters.  50' should have been a slam dunk.  I can't imagine just how they managed to make the cable that bad.
