Due to a last minute change of plans was able to operate from home QTH
instead of attempting portable from the coast. However, other things (like
needing something called "sleep") made it a part timer in any event.
When the contest started the prospects for QRP looked pretty bleak. When I
worked Bert, K1IMI (N4CW) about 1345 he let me cry on his shoulder that I
had yet to work anything outside NA. I contemplated shifting to LP. However
at about 1400 things started improving and the better EU stations started
hearing me beginning with GR2HQ. Conditions got progressively better and
despite it being a part time effort, I was satisfied.
Noise levels on 80 were low enough to also grab DA0HQ, TM0HQ and GR2HQ and
other EU there. Great ears on those ops, not to mention ZL6HQ on 20. And
thanks to all who take the time to pull us peanut whistles out of the mud. I
am very much aware that the real QRP credit goes to the guys at the other
end of the "circuit".
Lot of fun and good to hear so many PVRC calls. In the "wow" department,
worked N4AF on 20M I'm sure off the back of the fixed array at NY4A at about
2300. He was only about S3 to me for his 1500W even with my tribander aimed
toward him. Also great ears, or maybe Howie just imagined that he was
hearing me QRP over the EU pileup at the same time I called!
Top phone contester Rob was in there doing a great job honing his cw skills
from KA1ARB. Bert, Nate, and Bruce were also in there whenever I turned
around and eating my lunch on jump balls!
73,
Jim, K4QPL
