The HWV (Helix Wound Vertical) I made specially for this contest worked surprisingly well. It was about 260 feet of wire wrapped around telescoping PVC pipe 2:1-1/2:1 diameter 27 feet tall at about 5/8" between turns all the way up. 48" dia cap hat. 30 radials 35' long around about 270 degsAzimuth (missing 90 was due east). It received adequately, but then, that's all I had to receive with, so I guess it did splendidly! It had a nice 2:1 bandwidth of about 25Kc when I matched the feed point using 2000pf/1000V fixed capacitor. That told me it had a decent Q and I was happy. 1830KHz was the center freq and I trimmed up the edges of the SWR curve with the rig tuner. Did fine. Everyone I called heard me fine, and my one small run was quite productive. All on top band QRP of 100W!
I went assisted to the cluster Sunday morning at dawn because I wasn't finding Hawaii which I need for 160 WAS.
I couldn't spend any more time than I did because I had to concentrate on some very large personal issues taking place over the weekend. But I proved this antenna DOES work and maybe better than a low dipole, because I did work 2 Hawaii, busting the pileup with 100W! Whoo-hooo!
So, that's my report. Respectfully submitted, Marty Young / W4MY.
