In this topic, Richard Fry (a well known RF engineer, with the best initials
for his job) discusses grounding of a vertical.  Others chime in including
the Chief Engineer of WSM Nashville (whose name is WATT...go figure).

I strongly recommend the Kintronics technical papers that is mentioned:

It is a decent discussion on grounding and series unipoles versus folded
monopoles.
