IARU - "The Find the HQ QSO Party"
I have missed operating this contest for quite a few years. I just got
back
into it in 2007 hosting W1AW/4. Lots of fun when you can work everybody
for
points and there is a vast supply of mults. It's over in 24 hours,
what's not
to like?
I was initially planning a casual operation, but conditions seemed good
and I
just kept "butt in chair". This was the first time I have used all 6
bands in a
contest in a long time. VIVA SUNSPOTS! The low bands were noisy, but hey
it's
the middle of summer here...
There was a great 15 meter opening on Saturday afternoon around
1800-2200z. I'm not sure if it was Es or this new Cycle 24 sunspot, but
it was unusually good and I could run west coast stations (rare from
here)and work some loud Europeans and South Americans at the same time.
The moral of the story is to always be on the lookout for unexpected
openings like this which produced over 400 Qs. I listened to 15m after
the contest on Sunday afternoon and didn't hear a peep, so it looks like
we lucked up on having that opening during the contest.
