Good to hear all the PVRCers on amid the vast horde of NCCC guys...
I had high hopes for this contest as the two practice sessions last week
went very well and I was unusually (for me) prepared this year. The omen
of how the contest was going to be for me was when I had a nice clear
frequency on 20 to begin at 2100z, then as I was entering the first QSO,
the computer locked up! I quickly rebooted but lost the frequency. The
first 4 hours were very frustrating on 20 and 40 as I got behind and
felt very weak. It was almost impossible to get any rate going for some
reason. 80m helped me get back in the game as there was a seemingly
endless supply of Qs on Saturday night.
79 sections went in the log very quickly without any searching. I had
resigned myself to not spend time in a VY1 pileup, knowing it could get
ugly with a new operator there. I saw a 15m spot for VY1EI late Sunday
afternoon, but heard nothing. I nabbed him pretty quickly later on 20
working split. I didn't have to spend much pileup time getting to him,
but it took a while before he corrected my call from W3MR to W4MR.
Sunday was going pretty much as planned until a very raspy wideband
noise hit 20m. It sounded a bit like power line noise but was not
evident on the other bands. I wonder if it was a plasma TV? I've heard
they are nasty, but I'm not sure what they sound like.
Looks like I need to get a lower antenna for 20m to the west. At this
point in the cycle, 120 feet seems too high.
