[PVRCNC] OT -cable telephone

Let me second Larry's comment about using fax machines. My HP
printer/scanner/fax/toaster/blender would not work reliably over VOIP.
I could not reliably transmit multi-page documents. I was selling a
house and those contracts are LOOONNNNGGG. Same on receive. Otherwise,
my VOIP service has been as reliable as my TWC service, not that that
is a ringing endorsement.

Slightly off topic related comment. After moving to the new house a
little over a year ago, I kept having problems with the cable modem,
and hence the VOIP service, randomly dropping off-line for 5 minutes
to half hour or so then coming back on. TV service never had a
problem. After switching out the cable modem, finally got a TWC tech
who knew his stuff. Turns out TWC got a bunch of incorrect
F-connectors in about the time I moved. They "fit" the coax, but they
weren't intended for the RG-6/11 whatever they had. by the time they
discovered the problem, there were thousands of them installed. He
replaced all the coax fitting and haven't had a problem since - other
than the normal cable outages...

FYI, I use Packet8 VOIP. Was cheaper than Vonage two or so years ago,
but like everything else, it's been creeping up, so don't know if it's
still true. Still a lot cheaper than Embarq.

I have twc and everything is done outside, my verizon box and twc were
next to each other. The house
was wired for cable and phone so I just plug phones in as you would
with tel company. If you loose
cable so goes the phone.

My only complaint is I can't get my combo printers (HP and Lexmark) to
reliably send faxes.

Guys,

Switching from landline to cable telephone via Time Warner.
The economic arguments just got too overwhelming.

Looking for others experience. Only know that it will require a
telephone modem hooked to the same
coax as the Internet modem.

Things that I couldn't get answered. Anybody I asked these questions
to had no clue.

1) Where is the cable modem located? Does simply supplying it with
generator power during power
outages restore all capabilities-- including the local 911 kluge?
2) How is the cable modem interfaced with existing telephones? Most
phones here derive their power
from the phone line and presumably the installation process will allow
the same.
3) Is there some "volume control" to bump up volume some relative to
the landline.
4) What about the potential for RFI? We don't intefer currently with
the internet service or
landline.

I'm looking forward to not paying 50% of my phone bill to taxes and
special interest groups.
I'm also looking forward to not having to call out Embarq 4 to 5 times
per year to get rid of the
loud hum on the phone line.

What unadvertised "gotcha's" are there? Thinking of something like
having to dial lots of extra digits to access long distance or things
like that.
