W4MR (AA4NC op.)
400 x 106 = 42,506 (5.3 hours)
This is probably the most fun format for a contest. I wish I had the
time for the whole contest. I did a half-time effort in my first NAQP in
many years. It was a shakedown cruise for automated SO2R switching here
using a DX Doubler. I think I can get used to not having to flip the
Radio 1/Radio 2 switch a few thousand times per contest! N1MM did pretty
well, unfortunately the operator was quite behind the curve, especially
at the start.
I actually set up the DX Doubler for the first time after the beginning
of the contest. (It's poor scheduling to have NAQP at the same time as
the NC State - Carolina basketball game!). I didn't realize that the
DB25 cable from the DXD to computer was flaky and sometimes it would
switch and sometimes it wouldn't. K4QPL calls as I'm working someone on
the other radio and I can't get back to him as the "*%&$ thing wouldn't
switch! Sorry for the delays Jim. I think I finally worked you on 2
bands.
Another very weird problem cropped up that has me concerned. At 100
watts, I usually have no interstation interference between radios. I use
stubs on most common band combinations. Something happened during the
contest that caused 40m to interfere with 20m rather badly. It is an
across the band buzzy sounding signal rather than the usual interference
which peaks at the 2nd harmonic of the 40m frequency. I have no idea
what changed to cause this. I never turned an antenna, and I can't
relate the sudden start of the interference to anything. Any ideas what
to look for?
