PVRCNC-East Chapter - October Meeting Notes
October 4th, 2007, Manchester's, Raleigh, NC, USA.
We drew another bakers dozen for the October gathering of the NC/East
Chapter. There was the normal period of table banter before K4QPL broke
through the QRM to begin Member reports.
Around the Table:
K4CIA, Bill: Bill's only radio-activity over the past month has been
to play around some on 160m.
K4CZ, Barry: Barry has been busy getting his low band Tee vertical
completed for the contest season. He was able to work 3B7C on 80m. His
big news was that his daughter and XYL were studying to take the general
and tech exams at an upcoming hamfest (ed note: both passed their exams,
de W4KAZ) DX'ing has bagged him New Guinea and Burundi as new countries.
KE4GY, Frank: Frank has a radio in for repair. He also has the base in
the ground for his planned 70' rohn tower. He has a 2 element 40m yagi
on order.
NX9T, Jeff: Jeff has done a bit of DX'ing. He has been able to get his
shack back in shape after the lightning strike that caused minor
problems. He's planning a round of wire maintenance before the season
gets under way. He also discussed as a good meeting program the video he
had prepared(in Nov 2006) from 'file footage' of members of the chapter
in action .(ed note: AD4L passed the original source materials into the
custody of W4KAZ at his last attendance, FYI. de W4KAZ)
N1LN, Bruce: Bruce has been chipping away at the large task of
building his multi-two station. He has at this time 1 40m 2el yagi on
the tic ring at about 66 feet. He is seeking additional hands for his
'20m antenna party' planned for 10/20/07. Although he has already done
some of the trenching and cable pulling, he still has yet more trenches
and cable pulling ahead.
N1YXU, Laurie: Laurie has continued to be the most reliable of the
N1LN ground crew.
W4KAZ, Kaz: No new radio activity to report. Helped N1LN with the 40m
yagi lift.
NT4D, Jay: Ditto W4KAZ...No new radio activity to report. Helped N1LN
with the 40m yagi lift. Also reported that NT4Q, Jerry had found a good
bargain on a FT-1000MP.
KA1ARB, Rob: Rob related the story of getting the foundation poured
for his Trylon , and reflected philosophically on the irony of digging
an enormous hole ....then filling it right back up!
K9EZ, Kent: Kent's hanging in with work, and is going to be soon
looking for sections of rohn for a tower.
N4TL, Tom: Tom has been DX'ing but 'not too much'.
K4QPL, Jim: Jim was currently without a radio, as his Orion was on
vacation at the coast. He was looking forward to trying out the efficacy
of the famed salt water ground plane when he has a chance to visit with
his radio. Jim reminded everyone that Sweepstakes was coming soon,
immediately after our next chapter meeting.
(via e-mail) W0UCE, Jack: Jack was out for the meeting because he is
going to be cooking BBQ as a benefit
(via e-mail) K4TMC, Henry: "On the road again....". Henry has already
re-arranged and cleared the spot for his Elecraft K3 --- so whenever it
comes, it has a home. He expects to be active for SS Phone.
Picayunes:
Jim, K4QPL announced tha WA4PGM and WK4Y would be passing through
Raleigh on the way to PJ2-land. If any were interested in meeting up
with them, they'd welcome the company for dinner.(ed. -and if I had
bothered to do the minutes in a timely manner, you might have heard
about it BEFORE it happened. de W4KAZ)
The paper contest was administered by K4QPL in the absence of W0UCE.
K4QPL did his best to stir controversy with the scoring, but and was
given an assist when there was a tie between KA1ARB and KE4GY. Rather
than risk tar-and-feathering, 'QPL deferred to the group to settle the
tie based on the questions answered. KE4GY achieved victory and won the
privilege of peeling the onion layer by layer by layer....ad infinitum.
Sho 'nuff, there was actually a prize nestled within the voluminous
package.
(ed., i.e."sho nuff'" = "sure enough", a simple translation for those of
you unfamiliar with and perturbed by the playful use of the Queen's
English as practiced by those of us happily(haplessly?) born to regions
lacking things like "winter" or "snow" or "educational opportunities".
de W4KAZ)
Next meeting of the NC-East chapter is Thursday, Nov 1st.
....and where were AA4NC and Jessica Alba? MIA?
