PVRCNC-East Chapter - November Meeting Notes
November 1st, 2007, Manchester's, Raleigh, NC, USA.
November brought a nice gathering that included several guests attending
their first meeting. There were 18 members and guests in total
generating the normal period of chaos and conversation before K4QPL
exercised his EssEssBee skills and broke through the QRM to begin the
meeting. Guests attending their first meeting were recognized and
welcomed , including KI4GUO, Jordan, KI4ZWQ, Jeanne, and KI4QXS, Daniel.
K4QPL also welcomed AL4T/4, Brad, just back from his deployment to YI
land. Member reports were then begun as the food began rolling out.
Around the Table:
AL4T/4, Brad: Brad is glad to be 'back to the world' and with his
family again after returning from his fourth deployment in the last five
years. He also reported that he now has his MP stocked with Inrad
filters, and is looking forward to squeezing in family time and a bit of
radio contesting too.
N1LN, Bruce: Bruce extended a round of thanks to 'the antenna crew',
and everyone who has been helping out. Bruce had another big thanks for
his better half, N1YXU, Laurie, for all of her support and doing so much
of the work. (ed. note: Bruce and Laurie have assembled the majority of
the antenna farm on their own - we just showed up for the burgers,
w4kaz) Bruce at one point alluded to Laurie's higher rates on SSB, and
tried to persuade the group it was due to her 'ladies voice'. The
intrepid group immediately heckled N1LN for trying to disguise the
possibility that N1YXU was just the better operator. At the antenna
farm, 20 meter antennas have been installed at the top and on the tic
ring @ 60' of the 20m tower. Plans are to complete the 20m tower for a
possible single band entry into CQWW CW.
N1YXU, Laurie: Laurie reported that she had been continuing in her
support role as ground crew for the growing antenna farm.
W4KAZ, Keith: Kaz helped out at N1LN for the 20m antenna hoist.
Piddled about in CQWW SSB, enough to test the new 20m dipole.
K1ZW, Larry: Larry had a bit of fun in the CQWW SSB 'test, logging
about 300 Q's and experimenting with N1MM. He also received a
certificate for the 10M Contest.
KE4GY, Frank: Frank noted that he had all of the parts for his second
toer, and that he played in CQWW SSB on 10 and 15 meters, S&P. He's also
working with N1MM.
KA1ARB, Rob: Rob is working toward having his tower completed before
SS Phone.
W4MY, Marty: Marty noted that he would be on his backup computer for
sweeps because !Murphy ate! his shack computer. He again introduced
KI4QXS, Daniel, who Marty said had pulled an all nighter for field day 2007.
KI4QXS, Daniel: Daniel is going to operate SS Phone with W4MY as a
multi, and continues to study CW.
K4CZ, Barry: Barry has been active some --when he can get to use his
radio!. His daughter Jordan has been using it to rack up DX since she
passed her upgrade to General class. He's going to put up an additional
low inverted vee for sweepstakes.
KI4GUO, Jordan: Jordan operated a bit in her first contest, CQWW SSB,
and plans to operate some in SS Phone.
KI4ZWQ, Jeanne: Jeanne took and passed the Tech test when Jordan sat
for the general upgrade. She plans to continue studying for the general
test.
K4TMC, Henry: Henry was able to attend in person for the first time in
a long while, and reported he would be installing an inverted vee to
allow him to operate and contribute points for 2007 Sweeps. Henry is
also eager to get his Elecraft K3, but its not arrived yet.
N4TL, Tom: Tom mad about 225 S&P Q's in CQww SSB. He's also been out
to help N1LN. But his most recent milestone was receiving his plaque for
making the ARRL DXCC honor roll, a hard won 27 year journey.
AA4NC, Will: Will put in 'about 3 minutes' in CQWW, and planned to put
in a full effort in SS CW.
NX9T, Jeff: Jeff had repaired his 80 and 40m antennas and is ready for
the season as his time allows.
K4QPL, Jim: Jim played around in CQWW SSB to shake out his station for
SS, and found out that his SO2R second radio, a TS-850 was 'belly up'.
KA1ARB had delivered him a 'loaner' for the coming SS CW weekend. Jim's
been working more with N1MM, trying to get past his attachment to TR for
contest logging. He expects to put N4AF's station on the air for SS
Phone as NY4A.
Reports via e-mail:
N4YDU, Nate: Nathan expects to miss SS Phone but expects to put in a
full effort for CQWW CW. He's been unable to make recent meetings
because of work conflicts.
W0UCE, Jack: Jack was wrapped up with his move, and unable to attend.
NI4S, Andy: Andy is unable to attend the meetings in person because he
is currently working an afternoon/evening work schedule. He's hoping to
be able to get some ideas for a possible springtime tower build.
Program:
After the member reports, we moved into two short talks about stategies
for Sweepstakes. KA1ARB, Rob started by sharing his tips for SS Phone,
titled "PVRC Super Top-Secret Tips for High Score in Phone Sweepstakes.
AA4NC followed up with his own suggestions, as recorded by Borat, for
the matter immediately at hand, SS CW. Will's presentation is titled
"Random Observings on SS Radiocontest For Make Glorious PVRC Victory".
Thanks to Will and Rob, the accompanying text for these discussions is
now available on the PVRCNC Sweeps home page. Currently the PVRC main
page has a link to this material.
Running in the background was some of the video of various PVRC
operations. At the end of the meeting, one selection from the
comilpation was run for those able to stay to watch. This is the
material gathered by AD4L and NX9T last year for the 10th anniversary.
Fun stuff.
Next meeting of the NC-East chapter is Thursday, Dec 6th.
