[PVRCNC] Visiting Raleigh this weekend

Ty,

Jim is right about Coopers in downtown Raleigh. I worked in downtown
for 18 years and spent a lot of lunch times there. They do use a lot
of vinegar in their sauce.

As for Old Time, I have never eaten there, so no comment.

Since I travel a lot around the country and state, I have found the
Smithfield's BBQ chain to have good and very consistent pork from
outlet to outlet. I prefer the pork in large chunks, like you would
find when you pull it right off the bones from a freshly cooked hog.
Smithfields does a good job in providing some chunks on their plates
versus the finely chopped version that a lot of others serve.

There is no Smithfield outlet near the fairgrounds. However, there is
one in Wake Forest along US1 as you come into the area. There are
others in nearby Fuquay Varina, Clayton, Garner, Zebulon, and Durham.

Anyhow, in most parts of the country you learn to not get into
arguments about religion and politics. Here in NC, you have to also be
careful about discussions of BBQ styles and flavors.

Although a native NCer, I really prefer Texas style beef brisquet BBQ.
Dixie Bell's in Apex is the best for that in our area.

You know how to start a big argument don't you, Ty??? No two
Carolinians
will ever agree. But for one of the best close to the fairgrounds, Ole
Time
is very good. Info and reviews below:

Personally, for genuine Raleigh tradition, Coopers Barbecue downtown is
my
#1. But I'm not even sure if they're open weekends as they go for the
weekday lunch trade around the offices and courthouse plus takeaways.

Would be great to at least say hello but we're renovating a house at
the
beach and the honey-do list expanded after SS CW and I've got to put
away
some points for SS phone so will be out of town.

Jim, K4QPL
