[PVRCNC] Flat panel monitor questions

Guys,

I need some of your experiences regarding flat panel computer monitors.

Decided to buy a flat panel display first for the weather station 
computer.  Space for a monitor was limited.

I bought a Sharp LL172C 17" beastie.  This was a sale item at STAPLES.

It was just fine for the above purpose.

Just for kicks I decided to hook it up to the main computer to see if 
it would be satisfactory there.  No RFI is a possible benefit.

Maybe I'm spoiled by a CRT monitor, but the flat panel monitor isn't 
satisfactory at all.

1) Can't seem to get sufficient brightness/contrast so that it doesn't 
look somewhat washed out.  Playing with the various adjustments hasn't 
helped.

2) More disturbing is that the brightness/contrast seems to vary from 
the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen.  The top is 
relatively OK while the bottom seems washed out.  No angle of tilt 
solves this.

3) Colors are not very vivid.

Now for the questions:

1) Is this typical of these displays?
2) Is there an affordable flat panel monitor out there that doesn't 
suffer from the above.
