A few people have sent me email about the lightning rods. 

My Dad had lightning rods put on his farm house and barn in the 1950s.  I
can remember lightning hitting the barn when I was watching the rain. Sure
got my attention!! I know the house was hit a few times and one time I had
my arm on the window sill.  It was damp and not too far from one of the
down conductors. I felt a tingle from it.

A neighbor down the road from us did not have them and one night lighting
hit their barn. Another neighbor saw it happen. By the time the fire
department got there is was fully engulfed. They could only make sure the
house was saved. The farmer paid off the mortgage with the insurance money
and quit farming. He leased the land after that.
