Part time effort, all S&P unassisted.

Every time I play in an SSB DX contest I gain new respect for those of you who "Do it for a living." And I learn new things. Like this:

Did you know that "Koahfa-fi" is the same thing as EA5 in code? Took me five minutes to learn that.

And I heard this South American on 80M way below the phone band calling CQ contest. And after his call he kept saying "A tree, too!" After determining he probably wasn't challenging N6TR to a duel with machetes, it seems that he was listening for calls on 3832 khz. When I got the hang of split it was sort of fun. At least for a half hour or so.

And you should have heard the I-something on 20 (40db over running only 300W!) becoming overwrought when someone suggested that he QSY as the frequency was in use. After letting the world know for five minutes or so in very expressive terms that he had been on the frequency first, he clinched the argument by telling the other station that "unless you want to pay my electric bill, I will call CQ whenever I want to!" Maybe there's a new plan in the works to auction run frequencies. Works for the FCC in the commercial world. I'd probably give up my run frequency several times for a new Orion!

Can't wait until the next SSB contest to brush up some more on contesting phonetics and operating techniques!

73,

Jim, K4QPL ...-.-
