PVRCNC-EAST
The July meeting for PVRCNC-EAST was held at a new gathering place. What
started out as a mere “trial” location was quickly voted in as being our new
home (Manchesters). A power point presentation displayed several member’s
Field Day activities (tnx ‘QPL). The first of what promises to be many
interesting “activities” was conducted by newly appointed “Program Director” W0UCE.
Our evening exercise consisted of a ham radio word search followed by a “
Name the product” puzzle which included ham radio related hints. When the dust
settled, KA1ARB took home the “six pack.” While not a WX0B type six pack,
the libation should prove useful during the IARU this weekend. N4AF sent
along a very nice “3 month contest calendar” for each attendee. Thanks to all
who made this undoubtedly one of our most unique and enjoyable meetings in
quite some time! Those present included: WW4M, Jim; K2AV, Guy; NT4D, Jay; NT4Q,
Jerry; W4KAZ, Keith; N4PY, Carl; N4YDU, Nate; N2NFG, Bob; K1ZW, Larry;
W0UCE, Jack; K4WES, Wes; K4QPL, Jim; NX9T, Jeff.; and KA1ARB, Rob.
Chapter Update:
Members were encouraged to participate in as many of the upcoming contests
as possible. Get on the air, make some contacts, and submit your log. Even
if you can only get on for an hour or two. Don’t forget the club’s 5M award!
For qualifying contests, every little bit helps you reach the goal of the
extremely handsome plaque that can adorn your shack wall.
Special activities for the August meeting include a “BYOA” party. “Bring
Your Own (station) Accessory. This is intended to be a “show and tell” type
event. No rigs...but about anything else radio related will work. Even
software. We will also be starting a chapter “Swap/For Sale” listing so bring a
list of any items you want to move on. You don’t have to have the bring the
item to the meeting, just bring a list/description of whatever you have. We
may post a master list the website!
W0UCE will be hosting an “Antenna Party” at his QTH sometime in August.
Good chow and plenty of antenna talk is scheduled. Please QRX for details.
(Editor note: Thank you Jack for the fun "contest" games and the creative
prize!")
Member Reports:
WW4M: Jim is glad to be back after a 4 month absence. He has recently moved
in to a new QTH in Durham and is thrilled to have a real ham “shack” out in
the backyard with all the comforts of home. Jim enjoyed a casual FD with
some friends but is looking forward to some competitive contesting this fall.
K2AV: Guy continues to work on the 160m antenna project for implementation
at N4AF. He also sought to enlist volunteers to help in an experiment that
will document ground effects on an antenna laying directly on the ground.
NT4D: Jay reported that, along “with a little help from his friends,” he
was able to get his tower and antennas down. Repairs are underway.
NT4Q: Jerry, one of the “friends” who helped Jay, is also getting excited
about his own tower project. He went on the record as saying that in the next
few weeks his tower will be up!
W4KAZ: Keith, another of Jay’s “friends,” participated in a FD outing with
N4YDU and crew. A great time was had by all.
N4PY: Carl was glad to be back after missing meetings for a few years. It
was quickly determined that he had “at least” two meetings in and he was
officially welcomed to the fold. Carl is N4YDU’s father, and also operated at
Nate’s FD event. Carl continues to keep busy working on various radio control
software programs.
N4YDU: Nate is thrilled to be back in his home now that the renters who were
in it have moved out! He’s enjoying the summer since taking a teaching
position last fall, this is his first “summer off.” Nate and the guys had a fun
time operating FD from a school just down the road from his house.
N2NFG: Bob reported that the extra watering and fertilizer must be working
as his tower has now grown to 40'. While not operating seriously, he did
visit a couple FD sites. Bob was a little dismayed about the dismal activity
level during the recent VHF contest. He is spending time playing on 6m.
K1ZW: Larry, formerly WA2SRY, made his first PVRCNC meeting and was warmly
welcomed. Larry has been DXing quite a bit lately and looks forward to our
next meeting.
W0UCE: Jack asked for help getting his log periodic HF antenna up and
quickly offered to host a party as an incentive. He operated for approximately 1
hour during FD and had a great time. 160m projects continue.
K4WES: Wes spent FD with WW4M and some others in a casual setting. He just
recently started a new job and has been working on adding new countries to
his DXCC totals.
K4QPL: Jim thanked Guy for the many years of service as past chairman. He
also spent FD with N4YDU and crew. Jim shared a few ideas about our chapters
future and plans to increase enthusiasm among the ranks.
NX9T: Jeff spent FD camping with his family at Hanging Rock State Park and
celebrating his youngest son’s 6 year old birthday. Nonetheless, he operated
mobile for approximately 5 hours, mostly late at night, to the tune of a
couple hundred Q’s. The current project is a thorough shack
cleaning/reorganizing.
KA1ARB: Rob recently installed lightening protection on his roof
tripod-mounted tribander. He is hoping to get up 40/80 meter wires soon. Rob is
dealing with rotor problems but is still planning to operate some during the IARU.
Via Email: K4HA (Bob) reports that he operated with some buddies of his in
New York. They operated as W2MU and as evidenced by 3,488 contacts and their
5A score of 11,122 points, put together a very competitive operation.
Congrats on a great effort.
73,
jeff nx9t
