Hey, Brad-
Welcome aboard this crazy aspect of Ham radio- extremely habit forming!
You are welcome to come to Winston-Salem- we always need new operators
for the longer events- There ar so many things to learn, and the best
way is seeing it happen.
Now, echolink is another story - you and I and some others from the
group could give you all sorts of info- from station design and ideas,
antennas, software, tips/tricks to certain contests. My refernce to
using echolink before a contest is to check propagation, pickup last
minute tips, audio checks between stations, etc.
The next contest we'll be largely involved with here is the NC QSO
party- The FARC sponsors it, and our W4WS Contest station is one of the
bonuses- There are also some stations/operaotrs closer to you, in the
Triangle area that you could visit- I'd start with getting to a PVRC
meeting and picking their brains-

If you see W2DZO on Echolink, generally in the evenings after 9pm, be
sure to stop in.
Contesting.com is another huge source of tips, info, and general contest
stuff you might enjoy.

Have fun!
73,
Henry, W2DZO
