Re QRS and QRP stations, everyone needs to take it as a personal duty to be
kind to these guys and welcome them into contesting with every possible
consideration. If it weren't for the casual qso's they provide, cw SS would
be over in the first 6 hours.

The QRS guys are the future of contesting and ham radio itself. When I work
a Ck 00+ I always insert an extra "FB" or "Vy 73" in the QSO. If I have to
crank the speed way down, when finished, I don't turn it back to 30 or 35
until I've already started on my next CQ. Doesn't take much to be a positive
force, and unfortunately it takes even less effort to chase them off by
grudgingly QRS or worse, not QRS at all for them.

The QRP guys are the real gems. Most are not newbies but they get their
kicks from either sounding like a kw with a mucho element beam or having us
come back to their .003nanowatt Altoid special which is about as detectable
as a random quark.
They never seem to have a problem copying you, they wait patiently until you
work the loud stations, and they don't run off if you're tied up on the
second radio. If you ask for a fill they assume it's because they're weak
and not because you were distracted or hit the wrong key. It's rewarding
when you successfully log the QSO and even more so when you can blast out a
string of dits and a QRL! when someone tries to take your run frequency
(which the QRP guys never do) while you're trying to copy their exchange.
Their numbers are growing and as I said, if we didn't have them and the
other casuals to give us some qso numbers, SS in its current format would be
about as contesting relevant as the pterodactyl. The negative is that they
all live in Michigan. Their multitude of 200-400 qso scores is probably the
biggest reason we are now getting caned badly by the Midwest CC. Now if we
could just encourage them to pack up their Altoid and tuna tins and make
expeditions in November to Alaska and Northwest Territories.........

73,
Jim, K4QPL
