I've had one of the 64 meg units since Christmas (full price, rats!)
Great for us non-networked guys with multiple computers.  
THE floppy replacement for sneaker net.

Dunno about OS dependence.  It worked fine with WIN98se.  The software
came on a tiny 1.5" CD which worked just fine in a stardard CD drive. 
It actually is a chip rather than hardware.
