Bob, N2NFG, recounted his experience with the WPX SSB contest; his rendition=

of his experience with the event is priceless. Read on... =20
" I entered in the new class, SOS&M.
Single op, sadistic for those who had to copy and ask for fills, masochistic
for me to try. Here's how it works. Wander into a local Rat Shack in a
moment of weakness. For me, that's always..."I can resist anything but
temptation"...Oscar Wilde. Buy an HTX-10 25 watt 10 meter radio for $69.95
and a $14.95 102" fiberglass whip. $.05 for a pencil, scrounge up scrap
paper for logging. $84.95 for a complete, brand new contest station. Cut a
couple of inches off the whip and=A0 let me at 'em! Now you gotta know that
I'm supposed to be working during the entire time that ten is even close to
being open. I just went out to the truck for short periods when I thought I
could get away. You also learn some lessons trying this.
1. It's impossible to search for new ones, log, check for dupes, and DRIVE
at the same time. Sorry to all those folks who I scared the shit out of and
reported me as a potential drunk driver.
2. A parking lot LOWER than than the highways and power lines surrounding it
is the very best place to mount a SOSM effort.
3. A 25 watt radio will drain your battery faster than you can imagine.
4. Paper and pencil logging sucks. Were there real contests before
computers?

=A0=A0 Anyway, you may ask..."So how did you do Bob?" Well, I ended up with
about 100 QSOs and about 50 mults. Puny, but if no one else in NC turned in
a solp 10M score, good enough for an ARRL certificate! Did I have fun? You
bettcha! No EU's or JA's, but hearing the faint buzz of JA's working the
VK's and ZL's gave hope that the band just might open to Asia. Worked a good
number of VK/ZL guys to give me the warm fuzzies. SA, Caribbean, and African
stations were in abundance. The West Coast and five land were loud too. For
the time and equipment I had, it was a blast.=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0=A0=20=
