Was checking a couple things and had my radio on 15M about 0220Z Tuesday
night. Coming up from the low end I heard a good cw operator running
stations at a fast rate giving the exchange "599 NC" Since the band didn't
seem very busy I assumed he was local and tried to figure out who it was and
what sort of contest would be on Tuesday night. Then I realized I couldn't
even hear the stations on the other end. After Guy's discourse at the last
meeting on N4AF's antennas, I decided it must be Howie with an Italian
kilowatt and the Mother of All 15M Beams aimed toward Raleigh. Turned my
little TH7 west, pushed up the RF gain and did everything I could think of
to hear the other end of the QSOs. Nada. Zip. And the NC guy wouldn't give
out his call. As I was just about to quit I finally heard,"ZK1VVV UP" Went
up the band and found the pileup. Guess that proves I'm not a DX'er!
Maybe we could get better rates in contests if we put out the word that "NC"
stands for North Cook Island???

P.S. With the mystery solved, I cranked the XIT up 1.7khz and worked him
with 100W on the FIRST call! New country... I think. Bill, K4CIA: If I send
you all those envelopes from the bureau which have been collecting dust,
will you tell me my DXCC total??? ;^)
