For what it's worth, here's what the Yaesu FT-1000MP manual says about r.f.
output:
Power Output: adjustable up to 100 watts
(25 watts AM carrier)
Duty cycle: 100% @ 50 watts, 50% @ 100 watts
(FM & RTTY, 3-minute Tx)
IMHO, it's kinda vague about FM and RTTY; is the 3-minute limit for 50 or 100
watts?
I suspect it's at 50 watts, but it's supposed to be 100% for a continuous
mode). However, note that AM is limited to 25 watts....
What's am I ranting on about? Just trying to be a "nice guy" and pass along
some information that might save you a lot of grief. I blew my finals (two
2SC2879 bipolar rf transistors) during the TARA PSK31 Rumble a couple
weekends ago. Hassle? For starters, your MP weighs around 45 pounds...if
you're going to ship it to Yaesu/California, that's $60 each way (according
to N4AF)...then, there's the delay at Yaesu -8 weeks, I hear-, and Yaesu's
price for the transistors is $60.88 EACH!!!
Whoa!!!
So, my friends, it behooves you to crank down the gain when running digital
modes.
For insurance, you can use the Menu Setting 4.0 and set max power to 50
watts. Then, back off on that. K4HA advises running 25 watts and using your
amp to augment the output if you so desire. In PSK mode, 25 watts is ample
power for most contests.
Enjoy your MP, but be reasonable!
