[Pro2006] ref el question

Hmmm... I think I'd want to look at another thing before I entirely rule
out the LCD. One failure mode results in loss of contrast over time.
As the crystals (in the liquid crystal) are aligned to the same
orientation when activated you will notice that the contrast is
different based on the viewing angle. As the LCD starts to go bad
though, you will notice that the difference in contrast between viewing
angles becomes less and less - requiring that the backlight be on all
the time for easy viewing. Since the description in your post aligns
with this possibility, I would check to see if your viewing angle can
improve the contrast. If it looks poor even at the best angle and in
the best lighting conditions, the LCD may very well be to blame.

Hi John, yep, your el panel is bad. I have one of each model 2006. One
has
the on/off switch and the other has the dimmer switch.
The display is clear looking plastic, this is where the numbers get
displayed and the el panel just provides the light behind it so you can
see
the numbers.
It's real easy to replace it and snip a couple diodes at the same time.

Hello Chuck & All,

Sorry, I don't have anything to contribute to your lockout question.
But
about that EL...

My kids bought me a spare EL several years ago. I assumed then that it
was
the EL that would go dark. But it is the display without running the EL
that seems to be getting dark to me- I run the back light all the time
now,
where I didn't need to before and kept it off to "save it" as I had been
told.

So... am I starting to have a display problem or an EL backlight
problem?
