So Bob, for the 2006 with the opto 456 installed, would Spectrum Commander
be the appropriate software. This outfit has a load of offerings and for
the newbie it is not that easy to tell what you need or want. They offer a
15 day free trial for SC, so downloaded it. Cost is about $170. If this is
what you are referring to, is it really worth that much? Thanks

You probably know it better by the name `Scan*' or `ScanStar'
software. The `address' for the site is:
http://www.scanstar.com/index.html
A word of `WARNING'... {WAN GRIN!} The software is very
`pricey'! However... At least for the OPTO equipt `05s and `06s it does
what they say it does and does it quite well! I've got a copy of one
version of their old "Scan *" and a copy of their latest and depending upon
what computer I'm using, an old 486 based `luggable' / laptop / `desktop'
running PC DOS 7 / WFW 3.11 or a newer machine running WIN98se or newer
either piece of software does exactly what I want it to do. *If* you are
looking for `commercial' "bullet-proof" software this is like TBBS vs other
BBS software back in the days of `standalone' BBSes. The others `worked'
but you had to be `on top of them' all the time. TBBS, OTOH, was so
`bullet-proof' that one could get it set up and then pretty much forget
about it except to occasionally add or subtract the `echo' or two as needed
or requested! (I personally ran TBBS from 1990 up until just this last
August when I started getting ready to move and needed to get stuff packed
and ready to go. During all those years the *only* `problems' I ever had
was strictly *hardware* related. IE: I lost one HD, had some memory get
`flakey', and had a couple MBs decide to `go south' on me! The software
and configuration *never* gave me any problems. [I used to have to listen
to other SysOps moaning about this and that in their software doing this
and that whilst also `claiming' that the same software was so good.
{CHORTLE!}]) For *me* the `SigInt' software products are quite similar to
that TBBS software. YMMV? Pick up the `demo' and give it a try.

Some days it just isn't worth chewing through the straps.
