If I would have tried to build something like that, I would have made
the first LED of the signal strength LEDs to be the carrier detect,
so that carrier and signal strenght where in the same "cluster"
and not split into different parts of the LED array. The SQ would
of course have switched off the whole signal strenght LED bar when
it wasn't detecting a carrier. All this to make it easy to read
and understand when a signal is detected.
I would then also have made a low-pass filter and a detector circuit
that would control the old carrier LED to indicate the presence of
a subtone below 250Hz.
Perhaps I also would have tried to put a LED to the sound squelch
circuit, that would flicker and indicate whenever modulation where
detected. This is to guide me to which scanner I'm actually hearing
a conversation on and not just have opened up on a silent carrier.
But then, I have all these things in the Probe software, but it
would had been nice to have similar things in a stand-alone scanner.
