Hi Paul!
I lurk and typically don’t post, bus as Nick has said, this is a GREAT place to learn about premium receivers.
I also find myself going down rabbit holes researching receivers I’ve seen mentioned here.
I would be sad, and not know more about the receivers if the site goes away.
Slowly divesting of my R-390/390A/391’s, but enjoy g the newer SDR stuff.
I had been doing a lot of VLF listening here in SW WA, and truly enjoyed the CEI 357 when it was working well (it has a 30 dB loss of sensitivity somewhere!).
I put the R-389 on my “to buy” list as a possible better performer, but it quickly became a moot item after I got my ICOM 7300: I think the ‘389 had a 1000 Hz BW filter (ditto the ‘357), but when I cranked the 7300 down to 50 Hz BW on CW, I was able to separate two Canadian VLF’s on the SAME channel! They weren’t directly on frequency, so I was able to tune to the low side of one CW ID and decode it, then to the high side of the other one, and I copied it as well. I haven’t looked back since.
Using the ICOM R8500 to receive VLF, and the 7300 as an IF converter at 10.7 MHz allows me to really pull stuff out of the
Noise.
A bunch of the vintage Telefunken and R & S stuff interests me, while the thought of backup batteries built into chips (W & J) scares the daylights out of me! I’d hate to invest a pretty good chunk of change into something only to have it permanently die on me in short order.
Really appreciate the thoughts and inputs on various receivers!!!
Wishing everyone all the best during this Holiday season and throughout the upcoming year!
