Hello Peter,

I've checked today with my own Reuter Pocket.
In SYNC with removed carrier by shifting the DSP filter
you hear distorted audio of an AM signal sideband with varying pitch
as the sync detector is looking for a carrier to synchronize with.
But SYNC is not the mode with the IQ audio signals I was referring to.
This is only possible in DSB or DSBQ mode (without the need of a carrier).
The stereo effect is created by combining both sidebands like in a FM stereo encoder,
i.e. R+L for the mono or mid signal and R-L for the difference signal.
Both together create the stereo signal where you hear LSB on the left side
and USB on the right side in your headphone.
