Twelve data sheets have been added to http://Watkins-Johnson.terryo.org
covering most of the 300 series of early radios that Communication
Electronics, Inc designed and built prior to and shortly after their
acquisition by Watkins-Johnson. These radios covered HF, LF, VLF and/or ELF.
These data sheets cover the 301A, 301A-1, 302, 351, 352, 353, 354, 355,
356, 357, 371A, 373A and 377A radios.
Many of these were wideband receivers intended for RFI testing, Tempest
and subcarrier intercept. The notable except is the 357 which most often
came with the narrow bandwidths one would expect for receivers in these
frequency ranges. Not included is the developmental data sheet for the
358 receiver, which when finally developed was sold as the DMS-105
demodulator.
Added to the 500, 700 and 900 series already on the site, this completes
the collection of data sheets for early CEI radios.

I sent this out on the Watkins-Johnson io group and though some Premium
RX folks may be interested.
Unlike the WJ-8616, WJ-8617, WJ-8618 VHF/UHF radio series,
Watkins-Johnson mostly did not put external markings denoting the
different versions of the WJ-8715, WJ-8716, WJ-8718 HF radio series.?
Nonetheless, there are 35 versions of the WJ-8718 and 9 versions of the
WJ-8718A and four versions of the WJ-8716.
The majority of these versions contain minor variations to meet a
customer's needs. Some were trivial like the WJ-8718-3 that the NSA
ordered a special AGC time constant for less distortion at low
frequencies or the WJ-8718-22 which Sanders ordered as electrically
standard but with a gray front panel and black lettering.
Others, like the WJ-8718-4 ordered by the FCC have great changes like 1
Hz tuning and display resolution.? Or the WJ-8718-19 which is internally
unique and tuned up to 100 MHz.? Or the even stranger WJ-8718/651S-1
designed to be remote controlled by the Collins radio or a Delta RRC-1A
(I know nothing about this Delta unit, so if you do, please let me know).
Among these there are only a handful with really obvious external
differences like between the WJ-871x and WJ-871x/MFP and the WJ-871x/NAV.
The external differences between a WJ-8718 and WJ-8718A are minor, but a
number of internal circuits were updated chiefly when certain parts
became hard to get by the early 80s.? None of these are obvious unless
you know your way around circuit boards.? Things like new IF switching
circuits using 2N2222 transistors & MC1458 op amps instead of 3N187
MOSFETs and in the RF amplifier where a WJ A50 monolithic amp replaces a
scarce CP643 FET.
If you want to tease out the differences between the WJ-8718 vs
WJ-8718A, the WJ-8718-17 manual (available for free download on my
website) has duplicate schematics for several sections, with the second
schematic noted "(Product Improvement)".? I've never located a WJ-8718A
manual so this is as close as I can get on hard information (If anyone
has a copy of an A manual and is willing to share, I have a comb binding
machine and high speed scanners for duplex up to 11 x 42 inches and can
return a loaned copy quickly).
One of the more obscure versions for which I'd like to get more
information is the WJ-8716-2, which had a BNC on the rear panel bringing
out the first IF at 42.905 MHz.? I'm working on adding this feature to
my WJ-8718/MFP with the intention of connecting it to an SDR.? There are
no filters prior to this IF (unless the radio has the PRE option) so the
display will be much broader than the 455 kHz display with the matching
WJ-9188 signal monitor or from the SMO option which is a 10.7 MHz output.
I'd appreciate any correction or additions to this information.

Has anyone had experience with the Preselector on this receiver?? The shaft that goes through the front panel is coupled to multi-section variable tuning cap that is defective.? Finding a replacement has been difficult, if anyone can tell me of a suitable replacement it would be greatly appreiciated.

I had a preselector capacitor fail on an Anritsu receiver years ago. It was a very similar capacitor as was used in common transistor radios from the 60?s and 70?s. I was able to find one after much looking that would mount properly and I worked out the coupling and it was back in service.

I am looking for the LCD conversion kit for an ICOM R-9000 receiver. I
don't care for amber CRTs, and it is weakening a bit anyway. I know
there is someone in Poland that sells a kit for the ICOM 761
transceiver, and remarks that the kit will work in the R-9000. It is
monochrome, and looks good. I think the "official" kit from ICOM had a
color display, I would prefer color if possible. What have your
experiences been?

The Icom IC-R9000 included an integral full CRT display assembly made by the Japanese firm Eizo Nanao Corporation that included all of the CRT related electrical support components for HV and the tube interface requirements. The input was a single 1 Volt p-p composite NTSC (or PAL on special order) standard input signal. This Nanao Model MG-550CDM display was beautifully designed and made with minimal radiated noise thanks in part to the use of mu-metal shielding. We used the exact same CRT chassis on a number of medical instruments and if I remember correctly, OEM cost was $163 in 1000 piece quantities - a bargain at the time. The item of note is the NTSC-standard input signal, which is the old TV standard from 1954. At the end of production, Icom manufactured and sold a version of this outstanding receiver called the IC-R9000L that sported an LCD monochrome (greyscale) display at an impressive price in the $10K area. It was an easy manufacturing change as there were m
any LCD panels about that size made that would use an NTSC composite signal; just pull out the old Nanao assembly, shoehorn in a small TFT LCD panel, connect the composite NTSC signal and you had a product with an LCD display! This was also offered by Icom as a retro-fit kit for the older IC-781 and IC-R9000. The Nanao display was monochrome only, and most manufacturers who used it used a monochrome composite NTSC signal. The considerations of using a color CRT at the time included switching the video signal to RGB and this took three times the PC board space. In addition, the competitive Sony color CRT at the time cost $699 in 1000 piece quantity and the size and weight of the CRT assembly were about 30% larger.
The bottom line is that the Icom IC-781 and the IC-R9000 will only support a monochromatic display unit. Almost any LCD (or any technology) display will work that accepts a 1 Volt p-p composite NTSC input signal. Of course, with a visit to your local theatrical lighting supplier, you could buy a color film optical filter overlay and make that monochrome grayscale display any color you?d like!

Last Saturday I toured KPH, the maritime radio facility now owned by the
National Park Service and located inside the beautiful Point Reyes
National Seashore. KPH has the largest number of WJ-8718 and WJ-8718/MFP
radios still in use that I've seen anywhere.
Until Steve Pappin left the business, he had handled the maintenance for
their radios. Now they are looking for someone to repair five
WJ-8718A-23 that are down. The radios are owned by the National Park
Service and service work will be compensated through the non-profit that
maintains the sites. If you are interested and capable of doing the
work, please contact Richard Dillman through info at radiomarine.org
The WJ-8718A-23 is a generic WJ-8718 with the only mod being the
substitution of a 1 kHz filter for the 6 kHz AM filter.? The manuals on
my website should cover all the boards inside these radios.
