In such cases I use silicone oil, as it does not have the tendency to resinify, as normal light machine oil does when it oxidates during time...
Finally I recommend not to use oil from a spray can as its pressure may transport oil into the encoder. If you use a tiny screwdriver to transport a drop of oil to the point where the axis goes into the encoder, this is much more target-oriented and less risky.

Just needs a touch of a light lubricating oil, don't recall what I used.
