Absolutely.
This is why a tremendous amount of engineering man-hours went into
designing the synthesisers of the SRT CR91 and AEG E1800-series receivers.
However, the noise environment at LW makes external noise override even the
synthesiser noise at 30 kHz in a well-designed system.
The SRT CR91 was specified for a noise figure of
9 dB down to 100 kHz, and 17 dB at 50 kHz. Usually the actual
performance was better.

My 651S-1, which has the optional VLF front end module, works the best of all my RXs on VLF. If yours doesn't have the VLF front end, forget it below 250 KHz I believe.
The 8711A is OK, but seems noisier and less sensitive than the 651S-1. The URR-74/WJ8716 is pretty good as well.
. As you tune closer to the LO, the noise sidebands will increase - sometimes to the point where the S-meter will continue to rise just on noise as you go below 200 KHz or so. Many receivers stop at 100 KHz or so for this reason.
